We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – the kindness and generosity of strangers has the ability to change and even save lives, and is one topic that we will never tire of reading about.

The family of Zoe Ireland Drake, the baby born prematurely in Ireland last year after a flight diversion, can now go home after receiving €30,000 from a mystery donor.

The Drake family, who are from the US, yesterday found out about the incredibly generous donation which came following a public appeal for help to get them home with their little one.

In an appeal sent out on the Ray D’Arcy Show and through a GoFundMe page, Jenny and Gavin Drake revealed that they would need $67,000 to organise a special medical flight to get home. Without this specially equipped flight, Zoe would not make the flight.

Jenny was overwhelmed this week when Ray informed her live on his show that a text had been received from an anonymous donor, offering to pay the remainder of what was needed to get the family back to their native Tennessee.

Reading out extracts of the text received, Ray said: “I want to say, as a family, we want to donate in their quest to get home. Luckily, I have a successful business, but I like my daughters to take an interest in giving something back. I would, however, like to remain completely anonymous and do not want any publicity for doing this.”

As you can imagine, Jenny was left completely speechless. You can listen to the entire interaction in the SoundCloud clip below.

Zoe Ireland’s dramatic story began back in October, when mum Jenny went into labour while on a flight home from Paris. Pilots diverted the plane to Dublin, and baby Zoe was born in the Rotunda Hospital just 25 weeks into Jenny’s pregnancy.

With expensive medical bills and Zoe’s ongoing treatment to contend with, the family appealed for all the support they could get to help them to get home.

What a truly incredible end to their story. Well done to that good Samaritan for making this incredible gesture.
