Forgetting simple things such as returning a phone call or taking out the rubbish may be understandable, but when it comes to birthdays, there is no room for forgiveness – or is there?

New research shows that regardless of a man’s age, men are generally more likely to forget things than women are.

Experts from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology studied more than 48,000 people and asked whether they could remember details from conversations in the past and whether or not they could recall what they did a year ago.

The results showed that men faired worse, struggling with eight out of nine of the questions asked.

Professor Jostein Holmen of the university said: “It was surprising to see that men forget more than women. It was also surprising to see that men are just as forgetful whether they are 30 or 60 years old. The results were unambiguous.”

However, while women aren’t as absent-minded as their male counterparts, the study showed that women still have trouble remembering names and dates.

The team are now trying to see if forgetfulness in youth could be associated with dementia later on in life.
