Children consume THIS much sugar by the time they reach the age of 10

Parents have been urged to cut 2,500 sugar cubes a year from their child's nutritional diet by Public Health England (PHE).

The organisation is set to launch a campaign to encourage parents to choose food and drink for their children which contains a lower sugar content for the sake of their health.

The campaign comes after research showed that the average child has consumed a shocking 18 years' worth of sugar by their tenth birthday,

Before they even reach adulthood, most ten-year-old children have eaten at least 138kg/304lb of sugar.

Data was gathered by PHE from household eating habits, and the UK government agency are now persuading parents to reduce their child's sugar intake.

The maximum amount of sugar which is recommended for a child to eat is 20-24 grams per day, or five sugar cubes.

A PHE survey also found that children are consuming 52.2 grams of sugar per day, which is over double the recommended rate.

PHE's campaign, Change4Life, is showing the benefits of parents switching their shopping habits to brands of yoghurts, drinks and cereals with less sugar.

Choosing healthier products could remove the equivalent of 2,500 sugar cubes in one year from a diet.

Severe obesity in children aged 10 and 11 has hit an all-time-high, with one-third of kids leaving primary school overweight or obese. The rate of Type 2 diabetes is also soaring.

Overweight children are likely to remain overweight as they grow older, after developing these nutritional habits young.

They are also at a greater risk of suffering from heart disease and certain cancers.

Luckily, parents can now download a Change4Life app in order to identify low-sugar food products while shopping.
