About

Based on a concept that originated in the US in 1986 with Dr Joseph Garcia, baby sign language has become an international phenomenon allowing parents to communicate at a whole new level with their infants before they have learned to talk. Already extremely popular in the U.S. and across Europe, baby sign classes are beginning to take off in Ireland. At the forefront of this is SuperHands, who are have launched their baby sign language classes in Cork.

Using simple gestures, babies and their parents embark on an entirely new journey of interaction with each other and more importantly, have fun together.  Thanks to SuperHands baby sign language courses, parents and babies can learn to sign with each other in just 6 weeks through songs, poems and stories in a warm, relaxed atmosphere.

Baby sign language can reduce baby's frustration, enhance confidence, increase parent-child bond, accelerate speech and reduce temper tantrums.  Above all, however, the classes are about fun.

Erin, mum to Eloise, has really enjoyed her SuperHands’ experience: “We started SuperHands classes when Eloise was three months old and by seven months she was signing "more."  Now, at 23 months, she is able to let us know not only when she's hungry but also what she'd like to eat - raisin, biscuit, milk, banana, etc.  It has helped us understand her better as she learns to speak which, in turn, cuts down on tantrums by easing her frustration when communicating with us. SuperHands makes learning sign language fun for both babies and parents. I couldn't believe how quickly I was able to pick up the signs and start using them at home.”

Having begun in the West of Ireland in 2009, hundreds of parents and babies have taken part in SuperHands classes and learned this new method of communicating with their babies. Miriam Devitt, founder of SuperHands, welcomes the expansion of the classes to Cork; “This is a very exciting time for infant communication in Ireland. The feedback from my classes in Dublin, Clare and Limerick has been so great that I was keen to expand as quickly as possible. Now parents in Cork can experience the joys of signing with their babies in a fun and supportive atmosphere.”
