Christopher Reeve, who played the role of Superman four times before hanging up his cape in 1987, was just 52 when he passed away in 2004, nine years after he was paralysed in a horse-riding incident.

Now, in honour of her father’s memory, his 31-year-old daughter Alexandra Reeve Givens, who gave birth to her first child with husband Garren Givens last month, has revealed that she named him Christopher Russel Reeve Givens.

According to People magazine, a family spokesperson said: ''He was named after his grandfathers on each side, two very important role models for Garren and Alexandra.”

''The entire family is thriving during their first few weeks home,” they added.

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, which was set up to help other spinal injury sufferers, tweeted the happy news, writing: "'Congrats to Alexandra Reeve Givens on the birth of her son Christopher Russel! He is already rocking #TeamReeve gear."

Alexandra, whose mum is Gae Exton, is a senior counsel in the US Senate and met her husband Garren while they were both studying at Yale University, going on to marry in 2008.
