Congratulations are in order for Adam Clayton and his wife Mariana – they've just welcomed a baby girl!

Just three days after a triumphant homecoming gig in Croke Park, the U2 bassist, 57, and his wife announced the news this morning in The Irish Times.

The new parents published a personal notice in the paper, and kept it short and sweet. It reads: “Adam and Mariana Clayton are delighted to announce the birth of their beautiful baby girl, Alba.”

The couple got married in the registry office on Grand Canal Street back in 2013, and held a second ceremony on the French Riviera in a 14th-century château.

Earlier this month, U2 frontman Bono let slip the good news that Adam and his wife were expecting a little one, but Adam wasn’t very pleased about the public announcement.

The band had been performing at Twickenham Stadium, in London, as part of their tour when Bono began to tease his bandmate.

According to The Sun, Bono asked the audience, “Is Adam Clayton not a sexy man?” to huge cheers. Bono continued, “Is your sexy woman here tonight?”, and he nodded in reply.

Not knowing when to stop, the singer then said: “And expecting a sexy baby, can I say that?” Clayton shook his head and mouthed “no”.

A flustered Bono then turned to the crowd and laughed: “OK, forget I said that!”

Needless to say, it was not forgotten, and fans immediately took to Twitter to send Adam their congratulations.

One wrote: “We’re at the encore . . . still gobsmacked that Bono announced Adam and Mariana are expecting a baby during the show #U2TheJoshuaTree2017”.

We're absolutely delighted for Adam and Mariana - what wonderful news.
