Coronation Street never shies away from featuring intense and harrowing storylines. They may be upsetting for the viewer, but they’re breaking down the stigma surrounding many issues like male suicide.

The show is bound to raise awareness with their next storyline. Jack Webster’s life is about to change drastically when he contracts sepsis and faces amputation.

The new storyline kicked off last night, where we saw the youth trip and cut his knee and later develop a fever. Sophie fails to link the two conditions together and sends him off to school.

Later in the day, Seb Franklin and Faye Windass find him in a distressed state on a staircase.

Jack is rushed to hospital as his condition worsens. The team notice discolouration in his fingers and confirm the devastating news that he is suffering from sepsis.

The doctors inform his dad Kevin that Jack has a severe condition known as ischaemia. They have to stop it from spreading, but the only option will change his life forever.

Kevin has to make the harrowing decision to amputate his son’s foot in order to save his life.

As the storyline continues, we will see Jack come to terms with the amputation and Kevin grapple with the decision he made.

This storyline may be distressing and heavy, but it will highlight the severity of sepsis, as well as amputation. The condition affects staggering numbers of people every year. According to UK Sepsis Trust 44,000 lives are claimed by sepsis each year- which is more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer, and road accidents combined.
