Coronation Street star Bill Roache has opened up about the devastating loss of his daughter Vanya, who passed away earlier this year.

The actor explained that his daughter had been battling liver failure, and when her condition worsened he set off to the hospital to say goodbye.

However, in an interview with The Mirror, the dad revealed that he never made it to her. He shared: “We were 15 minutes away. There was snow all over the place. The sat-nav took us down a country road which went downhill and curved.”

He added: “The car just went straight on, smashed a sign, went over a traffic island and hit a hedgerow, smashing the whole front of the car.”

The soap star admitted that by the time help arrived his daughter was already gone: “It was 10.30pm. Recovery said they couldn’t get out for five hours. By the time I got to her, it was too late.”

Bill shared that he does feel guilty over his daughter passing away before he did, “She was only 50 and that was hard to take. You feel you shouldn’t have let that happen.”

“The pain of losing a child is unbearable. To not be able to say goodbye to Vanya was awful,” he said.

Bill added that despite his heartache, he knows his daughter is in a happy place, “I like to think about the happier times we had. When I say ‘I love you Vanya’ I know she hears it,” the Coronation Street star added.
