Martin and Elizabeth Corcoran, the parents of five-month-old baby Martin who died tragically on Sunday following a collision on the Athlone by-pass, have been keeping vigil at their daughter Isabelle's hospital bedside.

Thankfully, Isabelle, who sustained injuries which were said to be not life threatening, is expected to make a full recovery.

Commenting on the effect the tragedy has had on the young parents, a relative said: "They are beyond stunned at what happened. They've spent the day with Isabelle, at least they still have their little girl."

Martin and Isabelle's mother underwent tests yesterday following minor injuries she sustained during the collision on Sunday afternoon which happened after the family car skidded on black ice and crashed into a barrier on the N6.

Acknowledging that the devastated family will need a strong support network at this tremendously difficult time, Parish priest Fr. Kevin Reynolds said: "As a community we have to be there for the family and try and help them with their tragic loss."

Baby Martin's funeral will take place tomorrow in St. Michael's Church in Ballinasloe.
