There has been an outpouring of sadness in the movie industry this morning following the news that much-loved horror film director, Wes Craven, has died at the age of 76.

The father-of-two, who rose to fame following the release of horror franchises Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, had been battling brain cancer when he passed away surrounded by family in his LA home yesterday.

Wes, who wrote, directed and edited his first film in 1972, will leave a gaping hole in the movie industry, with high profile names taking to social media in order to express their regret at his passing and extend their condolences to his family.

Hollywood star and mum-of-one, Courteney Cox, who played a role in all four of the hugely popular Scream films, wrote: "Today the world lost a great man, my friend and mentor, Wes Craven. My heart goes out to his family."

With a nod to the filmmaker's unpredictable plot lines, Courteney's Scream co-star, Rose McGowan, wrote: "Thank you for being the kindest man, the gentlest man, and one of the smartest men I've known. Please say there's a plot twist."

Wes is survived by his third wife, Iya Labunka, whom he married in 2004, 40-year-old son Jonathan, 37-year-old daughter Jessica and three grandchildren.

Our thoughts go out to the much-loved star's family and friends at this devastating time.
