Many women are diagnosed each year with an inverted cervix, but what is it and what does it mean for your health? Here are the basics to know about the condition.

1. Also known as a retroverted cervix, this is a naturally occurring condition which typically affects around 20% of women.

2. It occurs where the uterus is abnormally tilted at an angle. Rather than sitting straight up, leaning towards the belly, the uterus tilts the opposite way towards the back.

3. Causes of an introverted cervix can include pelvic surgery, fibroids, the labour of childbirth, endometriosis and pelvic adhesions. It can be diagnosed during a routine pelvic examination.

4. While it can make childbirth difficult, an inverted cervix does not prevent conception.

5. An inverted cervix also does not cause any specific diseases or particular problems for your body.

6. Treatment – although rarely necessary – includes exercises, manual repositioning or, in extreme cases, surgery.
