Ear piercing is one of those things that most mums don’t really think about until their son or daughter asks for permission to get it done.

Often seen as a rite of passage for some kids, it is important to remember that, as with everything, you should always think safety.

1. Is ear piercing safe?

Yes, ear piercing is safe if done in a clean, professional salon. However, even if the equipment used is sterile there are still a number of risks:

  • Skin allergies
  • Abscesses
  • Prolonged bleeding
  • Inflammation
  • Chronic infection

2. Where is the safest place to get it done?

It is important you go to a professional piercing shop when getting your little one’s ears pierced so research ones in your area. However, no matter where you go, you should always check that they use a single-use piercing gun and wear gloves.

Never do it yourself.

3. Caring for the piercing:

You will be given a special solution to sterilise the area and you should always ensure your son or daughter does exactly what they are told to do.

  • Always wash your hands when touching the area
  • Avoid public swimming pools until it is healed
  • Don’t touch or pick the area

4. How long will it take to heal?

It can take six to eight weeks for an ear piercing to heal. If pain does not go away or if your son or daughter experiences a smelly discharge or excessive redness and bleeding go see your doctor.
