An American family have been blasted after they were rescued from their boat after their 13 month-old daughter fell ill.

The Kaufmans were embarking on a trans-Pacific journey when the little girl, Lyra, one of two young children on the boat, fell ill and the boat broke down.

The family were rescued by the U.S. Navy, the Air National Guard and the Coast Guard.

It was reported that Lyra had an infection and a rash but is now doing much better.

After they were criticised for bringing such young children on a lengthy boat journey, the couple said: "We prepared as well as any sailing crew could."

They have lived on a boat for the last number of years and while many believe the couple are doing well by their children by giving them such unusual experiences, many others believe that this incident was reckless.
