They outraged parents everywhere, and were publicly shamed by celebrities including Elton John and Ellen DeGeneres with their comments about IVF, and it seems this duo has finally realised the error of their ways.

Acclaimed fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have apologised for calling children born via IVF as “synthetic”.

The design duo came in for major criticism last year when they said that they oppose gay adoptions, with Dolce adding: “I call children of chemistry ‘synthetic children’. Uteri for rent, semen chosen from a catalogue.”

Opening up in a new interview with Vogue this month, Dolce admits that he regrets his ‘offensive’ comments.

“I’ve done some soul-searching…I’ve realised that my words were inappropriate, and I apologise. They are just kids. You don’t need labels, baby labels,” he said, frankly.

Gabbana added that his views on the subject were affected by the fact that gay marriage is still illegal in Italy.

“I had thought of going to California and having a baby, but I couldn’t bring the baby back to Italy, because you need the mother’s passport. I asked about adoption in Italy. It’s very hard for a straight couple here – imagine if you are gay?” he said.

Their previous comments sparked outrage worldwide, with singer Elton John calling for a boycott of the Dolce & Gabbana brand.
