Children get sick, it is simply a fact of life.

And as stressful as it can be as a parent, there is not always a need to feel overwhelmed.

We have come up with a handy little list of what to do when your little one gets sick.

1. Firstly, don't panic.

Children get sick, so try not to panic. Your natural mothering instincts will kick in when your little one is unwell. They just need a little bit of TLC while they're on the mend.

2. Contact your doctor.

We are of the opinion that it is always better to be safe than sorry - ESPECIALLY when it comes to your kiddos. Be sure to give your doctor a call and let them know your child's symptoms, and take it from there. The doctor will advise you on what to do.

3. Get the right medicine.

Once you've spoken with your GP, you'll need to go out and get the right medicine for your little one. Ibuprofen can be given to babies over 3 months and weighing over 5kgs and can be given every 6-8 hours up to 3 times a day. Paracetamol can be used from 2 months and can be given every 4-6 hours up to 4 times a day. But remember, parents should always read the label of any medicine before giving it to their children.

4. Get your 'mum tools' out.

Your sick little one will need entertainment while they're at home getting better! Naturally, there will be very little activity that involves energy, so you better get your tools out. We're referring to colouring books, board games and all those other fun 'at-home' games.

5. Screen time.

Most of the time, we try to discourage our little ones from spending their days in front of screens - however, we make exceptions when they're sick. Stick on their favourite film or TV show (Peppa Pig, we love your work!) and allow them to relax on the couch with a blanket.

6. Cuddles, and loads of them.

When your child gets sick, they'll be extra needy (not that we mind at all!) Giving them all the love and cuddles may actually be the best medicine (not scientifically proven, but it is mum-approved)!

7. Be patient.

Don't expect your kiddo to get better right away, these things take time. Be patient, and keep checking their temperature, and you should gradually see an improvement. Don't send them back into school until you are sure they're better - it’s not worth the risk.
