Women often want thick and voluminous hair instead of fine and skinny strands. But even fine and limp hair can have a lot of volume; it all depends on what you put into it in terms of products and how you style it. There are lots of tricks and tips you can follow to give your hair an extra bounce and to get the look you want.

How you shampoo your hair can make a difference to how thick it looks. If your hair needs some body, take the less-is-more approach when buying a shampoo and avoid using oils, silicones, and petrolatum on your hair. Opting for volumising shampoos and conditioners which coat individual strands with film formers or protein to add thickness is usually a good idea. Another tip is to lather your hair with a shampoo containing "quaternium" which will stick to the hair after rinsing and will make hair appear thicker.

Your scalp produces sebum which acts as a natural conditioner for your hair. It is therefore not a big priority to apply regular conditioner to your roots. Instead, condition the lower half of your hair, the hair here will be older and more likely to be damaged and dry and in need of some help.

Getting the products that you use on your hair right is important to getting the voluminous hair look. We recommend using light styling products for achieving volume. Throw out any products that are waxy or sticky, these often cause hair to look limp and deflated.

Consider using volumising mousse, which can give your hair volume as well as acting as a heat barrier from styling tools. Hot tools such as hair straighteners, blow-dryers and hot rollers, can be damaging to your hair so it’s essential to protect fragile, fine strands against them.

An alternative to moose is volumising spray, which is easier to apply to the roots. An important tip when trying to get volume in your hair is to remember your roots! Whatever style you’re using, it’s at the roots where the lift in your hair will come from.  Voluminising sprays tend to be lighter than cream products and are less likely to weigh down and add bulk to your hair.

Next time you’re in the hair salon, ask for layers. They can add volume to any hair type, creating the illusion of more hair for thin-haired people.  However, we don’t recommend going too big with layers as you want volume with movement, not volume with stiffness.
