Minister for Children, Charlie Flanagan, has announced that there will be a statutory Commission of Investigation into mother-and-baby homes across Ireland.

Mr. Flanagan said that the government will receive an initial report by June 30th and said it was important that a light be shone on these “dark periods”.

Mr. Flanagan said it was too early to say who will lead the commission, but added he had some names in mind.

This comes after the discovery of a grave of almost 800 infants and young children in Tuam, Galway, last week. The children came from the Bon Secours home and are believed to have died between the years of 1925-1961. After investigating hospital records, historians were unable to find burial records or any mention of a burial location for any of these children.
