A couple from Scotland, who want to raise awareness of Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome, are taking part in the Glasgow Kiltwalk in honour of their daughter Olivia who died of the condition four days after her birth.

Andrew and Pamela McFarlane tragically lost their baby daughter in August after Olivia and her twin sister Sophia underwent surgery to alleviate the imbalance caused by the syndrome, which is a disease of the placenta and affects identical twin pregnancies.

The twins were the first in Scotland to have the surgery, which took place at 24 weeks while still in their mother's womb. The couple's daughters were born four weeks later, but while Sophia survived the prenatal surgery her sister Olivia slipped away at just four-days-old.

Determined to raise both awareness of this fatal condition and funds for the Fetal Patient Fund at the Southern General, the grieving parents said: "We decided to raise funds to help train others in performing the procedure that gave the twins the best possible chance of survival as there is currently only one doctor in Scotland who does this."

Paying tribute to the doctor who carried out the surgery on their daughters, Pamela said: "Dr. Gibson gave our girls the best possible fighting chance of survival."

Opening up about their daughter's tragic passing, dad Andrew said: "We lost our little Olivia but we have little Sophia who battled the odds to survive. We could easily have lost both girls so it is very bittersweet."

Crediting their two-year-old daughter Lucy for helping them through the incredibly difficult time in their life, the Mc Farlanes said: "She was completely oblivious to the situation but she has an incredible ability to make us both laugh and was our strength throughout."

The fundraising campaign initiated by the McFarlanes has helped raised over £2000 for their cause which is much appreciated by Sophia's parents who have said: "Whatever the total ends up being will be amazing and I will be forever grateful to every single person who has helped us."

Sophia is now seven-months-old and is the apple of her dad's eye, who said: "She is now at the size and weight she would have been if she was a full term baby and is a right wee giggler. She will always be daddy's little warrior."
