Just because you have kids doesn’t mean you have to give up going out for nice meals every once in a while. In fact, most restaurants are family-friendly and welcome children, but for you as the mum, the first time you go will be an experience. Thankfully, with a little bit of thought and preparation, you can make it a pleasant and enjoyable time.

Avoid peak times
If possible, avoid going at peak times such as the lunch or evening rush. You may end up waiting for a table or be squished together. This will also increase meal waiting times and the last thing you want are hungry, cranky kids. You will likely need a highchair and sometimes at its busiest they can all be taken. Unless you have a portable seat, the last thing you want to do is sit your little one on your knee while you try to eat.

Bring snacks
If your baby is not going to be eating food in the restaurant make sure you bring plenty of snacks. Even if you plan on giving them something small off the menu pop some of their favourite nibbles in your bag just incase they don’t like what’s available.

Lots of playthings
Bring a couple of things for them to play with while you eat. Try to avoid anything that rattles or is particularly noisy – think of the other diners. If you forget to put something in your bag don’t worry, most restaurants have colours or small toys they can play with. Alternatively you could always just give them the salt and pepper shakers to keep them amused.

Be realistic
Don’t expect to be able to sit down and relax at the table for hours on end. Your youngster is likely to get bored and won’t want to stay in their chair for long, especially if they have started crawling already. Be realistic with your expectations, otherwise you may be sorely disappointed by your experience.

Choose your eatery wisely
Choose where you want to eat wisely. Make sure it is a family-friendly place, otherwise while they are likely to welcome you anyway, you may feel uncomfortable and in the way. For your first time go somewhere that is well known to you so you know what to expect. This way you will know what the changing facilities are like and how infants are treated and welcomed.
