Postnatal depression is a scary time for all involved and, sadly, considering it is not something that is talked about readily, it can be hard for the new mum's partner to know what to do.

While there is plenty of information about  how she can cope, your support as her partner will go a long way to aiding her recovery.

And understanding what is going on and knowing how to help can stop you feeling helpless.

1. There will be good days and bad days

Understand that there will be good days and bad days and while Mum may seem like she can cope one minute, she might not the next. So don't get frustrated or tell her that she must be better if she's not.

2. Reassure them

It is important you reassure the new mum that there is help out there for them, whether they are ready to avail of it yet or not. It is also important that you tell her that she even though she doesn't feel great she is still a great mum.

3. It can take time

Getting through PND takes time and the new mum may experience it for weeks or even months. And while it can be frustrating for someone on the outside to have to deal with it, it is important you give her time.

4. Give her a break

If possible, give her time to herself where she can rest or enjoy some exercise. Both of these will help her feel less lethargic, more energetic, enjoy a better mood and cope better.

5. Seek professional help

If they are really struggling with their PND or you are in any way concerned, talk to your GP who may be able to provide you with information to help you help them. They can also point you in the right direction if either of you feel the mum would benefit from professional help.

6. You need to accept it

The longer you take to accept that she is going through PND the longer it can take for her to get over it. While it can be extremely frustrating, particularly as it can be a difficult illness to understand or even relate to, the sooner you realise that she needs help the better for her recovery.

7. Know that she will get better

While it is difficult to look towards the future it is important you understand that she will get better and she will come out the other side.
