Your sitting room is often the cosiest spot in the house.

It’s the space you retreat to after a hard day, and the place you entertain your guests - so it should feel and look cosy, comfortable and welcoming.

Here are a few tip on how to make your sitting room cosier for you, the family, and all of the visitors who drop by.

Keep views clear: Keep coffee tables low and the tabletop embellishments simple. You don't want to have a coffee table filled so high with plants, candles and stacks of books that guests can't see each other.

Arrange the seating: Put the focus of your living room's seating area on the people who will be seated and chatting and not something like a TV. This will instantly make your seating area feel more social. Consider the angles of seating. Sit in all of your seats and see how they feel. Your neck shouldn't be strained or your body at an uncomfortable angle when trying to chat to your guests.

Use lighting to set the mood:  Turn off that overhead lighting, add in lamps around the room for balanced low light and even include a few candles to create a relaxing, intimate mood.

Put seating close together:  Seating spaced too far apart doesn't create a cosy feel. No one should have to lean in over a coffee table to hear someone talking at a normal volume. Consider placing seating in a little closer and seeing if that feels a bit more friendly for guests.

Accessorize: Anchor your seating arrangement with side tables and other accessories, so you create one cosy spot for sitting and chatting to guests. Accessories you pick up along the way, will also add a personal feel to the room, which is important for a space that you want to relax in.
