How to maximise your child’s small bedroom

Are you looking for ways to make the most out of a small bedroom? You may be worried about your child outgrowing their room as they get older but with clever planning, there is no reason why these rooms can’t be utilised as perfect bedrooms for both children and teens. With the use of these solutions, your child can enjoy not just sleeping but playing and relaxing in their room too.

Built-in storage

Built-in storage is a fantastic option for any small bedroom, as it allows you to maximise the little space you do have. This is great for the rooms of young children who may have lots of toys and can continue to be used as they get older.

Consider what type of storage would work best for the room in question. For very small rooms, built-in wardrobes featuring sliding doors can be the perfect solution as they don’t require additional room to open.

Utilise wall space

Whilst a room may be small in square footage, you might have a good amount of wall space to play with, especially if the room features high ceilings. Shelving is great for both storage and decoration. Practical items such as school supplies can be concealed in storage baskets, while more personal items such as framed pictures can be displayed proudly.

There are lots of other ways you can also utilise wall space whilst encouraging creativity. Including a whiteboard or chalkboard is perfect if they are arty. This can also come in useful as they get older and can be used for revision.

Bed choice

For a small bedroom, your choice of bed is key. Despite is being a non-negotiable piece of furniture, there are still plenty of options for pick from.

High sleeper beds are a popular choice for small kids’ bedrooms, fun for kids, and practical for freeing up floor space and often coming with built in under bed storage. Whilst these can be a good option, their longevity of them can be a concern. A high bed can only be used safely once a child reaches a certain age, and then can no longer be used once they outgrow it.

If you anticipate this to be a problem, or you’re on a strict budget, it could be a better option to go for an ottoman bed frame. Ottoman beds feature under-bed storage that is accessed when the mattress is lifted. These are often considered the best option for small bedrooms, as unlike other storage beds, no additional floor space is needed, for example when opening under-bed drawers or accessing storage boxes.

Underbed storage is valuable for storing items your child doesn’t require regular access to, for example out of seasonal clothing.

Declutter

Once you have put in the hard work of maximising the space of a room, don’t let this go to waste due to excess ‘stuff’ taking up space.

It goes without saying that organising any room, particularly one that isn’t blessed with lots of room, should start with a declutter. Removing anything no longer needed or wanted from the room provides the perfect opportunity to see just how much space you have to work with. This should include everything from unused furniture to unworn clothes. Try to be as ruthless as possible here, if there are toys that your child hasn’t played with in months, it’s unlikely they are going to be missed.

Anything that is in relatively good condition can be sold for extra cash or donated to a local charity. For larger items, many charities will come and collect directly from your home. Anything that can’t be sold or donated should be recycled if possible.
