Being a teenager is not easy and motivating them can be even harder. There is no right way to encourage your teen, but you can still help them with some of the difficulties that they may face in their teen years.

Extracurricular activities
The best way to get your teen out of a slump is through extracurricular activities. Hobbies and sports will not only keep your teen busy but will help build your teen’s confidence in the long run.

Expression
Sometimes with all the pressure and confusion surrounding our teens they can be unsure of who they are, and how they want to express themselves. If your teen is bottling up their emotions, it can cause many problems for them, including lack of motivation. So, it’s important to set the basis for your teens on how they should communicate their emotions, that way they will know how and when to approach for help.

Peers
It’s important that your teen surrounds themselves with good friends, especially those who will help motivate them. Peer pressure can be the cause of many troubles for your teen and can often lead to bullying. So while it’s good that your teen wants to fit in with their group of peers, make sure they don’t lose sight of who they are at the same time.

Give them responsibility
The best way to show that you believe in your teen is by giving them responsibility. There are many ways that you can place your trust in your teen. Whether it’s minding younger siblings, the house, cooking dinner and the most trying one of all, teaching them how to drive. The more your teen succeeds in their new responsibilities, the more they will feel able to motivate themselves to do other things.

Talk to them
Sometimes there can be underlying reasons behind your teen’s lack of motivation. This could vary from having problems with friends, romantically, low self-esteem or difficulties with school. Once your teen enters a spiral of no confidence in themselves, it can be hard to motivate them to do anything. In these cases all you can do is talk to your teen and if possible share experiences of your own struggles. Encourage them to set their own goals that they can aspire for, and not to give up if they don’t succeed initially.
