A baby or young child won’t be able to express or describe pain in the same way an adult can, which makes it very difficult for parents to assess the situation.

Here are some ways you can figure out if your child is experiencing pain:
  • Pay close attention to how your baby is behaving. Watch to see if they are moving their body normally and look at the facial expression. Young babies may cry more than usual or in a more distressed manner.
  • Some children react in different ways to pain and may turn pale or experience sweating and vomiting.
  • If your child is able to speak, listen closely to what they’re saying to you. Some children may under or over play the pain they’re in so be thorough in your questioning if you suspect something is wrong.
