Not only is damp dangerous for your health it can even wreck havoc on your home. If left untreated it can damage skirting boards, cause paper or paint to peel, create tide marks on walls, leave dark patches on your floor or ceiling or cause an unpleasant smell.

To prevent it getting too far, it is important you spot it early on and treat it.

Condensation on windows

Check your windows for condensation first thing in the morning; look out for wet patches or puddles on or near your window sill. To treat this form of damp open your windows regularly and ensure you have proper ventilation in your home.

The presence of fungus or mildew

Keep an eye out for the presence of mildew or fungus which can be a sign of penetrating damp. If the problem is small you can simply scrub it off with water and disinfectant and allow to dry thoroughly. For more severe cases you may have to get someone in to figure out what is causing it.

Look for wet patches

A burst or leaky pipe can gradually cause a wet patch to emerge so be vigilant for any form of wetness where it shouldn’t be. Do a regular checkup of all pipes or water connections and fix anything when you see a problem.

Smell it

Damp has a distinctive smell so even if you can’t see it you will no doubt be able to smell it. Dark places like the back of wardrobes or behind furniture or appliances can harbour damp without you knowing so if you do smell something musky check it out.
