We've all experienced that heartsinking moment when we realise something rather important may have been accidentally relegated to the grimy confines of our household bin, right?

If so, spare a thought for poor old Bernie Squitieri from Missouri whose domestic error almost cost him close to half a million dollars when he accidentally discarded his wife's $400,000 diamond ring in the trash.

Keen to get rid of the rubbish before the morning bin men arrived, Bernie snatched a paper towel which had been lying on the kitchen counter and added it to the day's rubbish before handing it over to his local disposal men.

Unsurprisingly, it wasn't long before Bernie's wife Carla realised she was without the diamond ring she had placed on a napkin on the kitchen counter, and the Squitieris found themselves clamouring to make contact with Meridian Waste Services as the ring swiftly made its way toward its final destination - the landfill.

After much begging, the Squiteris were allowed dig through 10 tonnes of garbage before operations manager Joe Evans eventually emerged victorious clutching the ill-fated diamond ring.

"10 times out of 10, we don't find something like that," Joe told ABC News. "It was the best feeling in the world to find that ring and give it back."

We can only imagine!
