Incredible but messy: Charlize Theron gets candid about motherhood

Charlize Theron might be an A-list Hollywood actor but she has opened up abut a role closer to her heart - motherhood.

The 43-year-old spoke about her kids on the red carpet at the 2019 Golden Globes, where she was nominated for her role in Tully in which she plays a stressed mother of three who hires a night nanny.

Charlize is mum to two gorgeous kids - son Jackson who she adopted in March 2012 and daughter August who she also adopted in July 2015.

She opened up about juggling motherhood with a busy career when talking to E1 News' Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet.

She said, ''I was coming out of the early stages of being incredibly sleep deprived.''

She continued, ''To me, it felt like something that felt super authentic. I think parenthood is incredible but it's messy. We don't see enough of that and I think it's hard on moms and society to feel that pressure."

She explained that mums have been taught that's it's wrong to be selfish but that it is so important that they look after themselves first.

She said, ''Somehow if you do that, you're a terrible mom. I know when I look after myself, I know that I'm a better mom to my kids."

Charlize's Golden Globe nomination marks her fifth, while she took home the gong in 2004 for her role in Monster, which also saw her receive an Academy Award.

Her words about motherhood strike a chord - maybe we could all learn a little from them.
