Is it teething time for your little one?

Introducing your partner to your kids is a huge step in your relationship. For most, sharing this part of your life with them means you are moving on in your relationship to a stage of bigger commitment.

And no matter how long you’ve been together for, this is a big deal for both them and your kids.

Talk to the kids first

Don’t just turn up one day, partner in tow, telling the kids that you’ve met someone - neither will appreciate the bluntness of it. Instead talk to the kids about your partner a few days or weeks prior to the meet letting them know all about about him/ her so that they have some idea what to expect.

Talk to your partner

While your primary concern should be your children, that doesn’t mean you have to let your partner fend for themselves. This meeting is going to be tough on them as well, so make them feel a little more comfortable by telling them a little about your kids so that they can find a common ground to work off.

Meet outside the home

Try to meet outside the home for a meal or maybe a trip to the park. Make it casual and short - meeting new people is tough so don’t drag it out for longer than it needs to be.

Be realistic

Just because you are madly in love with this new person doesn’t mean your kids are going to feel the same. Don’t push your new partner on your kids and vice versa, allow them take their time getting to know each other.
