Her mum is a successful businesswoman, actress and singer. Her dad is an Academy Award winner, a chart-topper and the star of one of America’s most loved sitcoms.

With parents like Will and Jada Smith, you’d think life would be a breeze for 17-year-old Willow, but the singer admitted that being the daughter of one of the most famous Hollywood couples isn’t as easy as it may seem.

Willow spoke to Girlgaze about what it’s really like growing up in the public eye. The singer’s life is nothing like that of your average teenager.

The young woman admitted that being a teenager is hard enough, without having the media scrutinising your every step.

She admitted, “I’m going to be completely and utterly honest, it’s absolutely terrible.”

The Whip My Hair songstress shared, “Growing up and trying to figure out your life… while people feel like they have some sort of entitlement to know what’s going on, is absolutely, excruciatingly terrible.”

Willow has accepted the fact that she can’t change her lifestyle, with parents as famous as hers, the public is bound to be invested in her life: “You can’t change your face. You can’t change your parents. You can’t change any of those things.”

However, the teenager shared that children of Hollywood stars are under an immense amount of pressure.

She shared that many children in her situation suffer from depression, “The world is sitting there looking at them through their phones; laughing and making jokes and making memes at the crippling effect that this lifestyle has on the psyche.”

Willow explained that you have two options when you are the child of a megastar like Will Smith, “I’m either going to try to go into it completely and help from the inside, or I’m really going to take myself completely out of the eye of society.”

She stated that she agrees that her generation is the most anxious generation of all time. She revealed that she is an anxious person, “We’re hypersensitive. This generation is hypersensitive spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally.”

Willow’s honesty is truly admirable. The 17-year-old is wise beyond her years.
