It’s incredibly difficult: Carey Mulligan on being a working mum

Being a working mum isn't easy, as one will tell you herself and A-List actor Carey Mulligan has just proven that she's no different.

The 33-year-old, who has been married to Marcus Mumford of band Mumford & Sons for six years, has two children; a three-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son.

In an interview, she spoke out about the lack of childcare provided on TV and film sets and how that has affected her work as a mother.

She said, “I don’t think being a working mother in our industry has been made that much easier. It’s incredibly difficult. Childcare is so expensive.''

She continued, ''I’ve never, ever been on a set where they have childcare, but I’ve been on lots of sets where lots of people have very young children.''

She has taken her kids on sets before but childcare had to be sorted out.

She said, ''it's always incredibly complicated. [Having childcare facilities on set] would make it possible for a lot of talented people to come and do their job.”

She also spoke about how getting pregnant also posed problems for actors.

When Carey was expecting during the filming of BBC Two drama Collateral, the programme’s writer Sir David Hare re-wrote her character as pregnant.

However, she said, ''I don’t think we’re at the level where it’s acceptable across the board yet. I think if people can hide it, they do.”

There was a mixed reaction to what she had to say, with some people angry and stating that sorting out their own childcare is an issue for them too.

One wrote, ''meanwhile in the real world .....Desperate Mothers doing crap minimum wage jobs to help feed the family. Proper childcare no way an option That’s “incredibly difficult“ while another said, ''says a woman with a net worth of $15 million. Classic.''
