Rumours had been circling for some time but we were still a little sad to hear that Hollywood’s well loved couple, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, had decided to get divorced.

The couple, who have been married for ten years, always seemed so solid and it came as a bit of a shock to the world when they announced the news just a day after their ten year anniversary.

Similar to Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow, the couple issued a joint statement to make their announcement:

"After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding."

The couple got together after Ben split from Jennifer Lopez in 2004, with the Argo director saying Garner helped to stabilise him after being tabloid fodder for so long.

Talking to Playboy in 2013 about their early days, the 43-year-old said: "My wife was definitely around then. Getting to know her, falling in love with her and being connected with her gave me a foundation to reach out and say, 'Okay, I'm going to do Hollywoodland. I'm going to direct Gone Baby Gone. Those were the steps forward I needed to put positive stuff on the board."

However, they actually first met in 2001 on the set of Pearl Harbour before reconnecting during the making of 2003’s film Daredevil. The couple went on to welcome their first child Violet in 2005 with Serphina, 6, and Samuel, 3, following a few years later.

Both Ben and Jennifer always appear united when it comes to parenting their children and always came across as a normal family. In fact, when Argo was announced as the winner of the best picture at the Oscars in 2013, Ben dedicated a part of it to his wife, saying: “I want to thank you for working on our marriage for 10 Christmases. It’s good. It is work but it’s the best kind of work and there’s no one I’d rather work with."

And during an interview with InStyle magazine, Jennifer said of her marriage to Ben: “We both know we couldn’t do what we do without each other.”

“He has been amazing at finding ways of telling me how much he appreciates what I do. Honestly, I would do anything for that man, because I know it’s not to be taken for granted.”

The mum-of-three has also always been honest about her parenting ability, saying: “I have a couple of celebrity mom friends that I go to for certain things that only they can — only we can talk about! But mostly I talk to my friends, my mom friends from Violet's school. And we just gab away like anyone. But pretty much I hang up from one mom friend and call another."

The pair are reportedly planning on remaining in their property in Brentwood, LA so that they can co-parent their three children, although they will no doubt be living in separate quarters in the 9,900 square foot mansion.
