Co-sleeping is one of those topics that parents debate over and over again, but a judge in New Zealand has sent out a very clear message against the practice this week.

District Court Judge Bridget Mackintosh has said that it is “critical” for parents everywhere to abide by experts’ warnings about the dangers of co-sleeping.

The judge’s comments come after an unnamed woman was sentenced to 12 months of supervision after the death of her 10-week-old son in her queen-sized bed.

The mother pleaded guilty to criminal nuisance by not providing a safe sleeping environment, having allegedly disregarded hospital nurses' repeated warnings against co-sleeping.

According to reports, police arrived at the woman’s home in October 2013, shortly after the child had passed away. The 27-year-old informed authorities that she had not been using her child’s bassinet.

The judge acknowledged the distraught woman’s deep remorse over the circumstances of her child’s death while handing down the judgement.

As well as the supervision sentence, the mother has also been ordered to attend sleep safety programmes and treatment.
