As travel becomes a lot easier and the world becomes a lot smaller, many couples have to deal with one half of them working abroad.

And while many hope it is only on a temporary basis, when you are going through it it can be a stressful and frustrating time.

If your other half is working away, the following tips will help you stay close and connected:

1. Send a letter

Nothing beats a handwritten love letter. While text messages, Skype, email and messenger are a lot quicker, there is something pretty special about a heartfelt letter.

2. Watch a movie together

Friday movie nights don’t need to be a thing of the past, simply turn on Skype or FaceTime while watching the same film and it will be almost like they are there.

3. Visit them

If you can, try to visit them - bring the kids one weekend and leave them at home another. This way you will be able to see how they live and feel like you are still a part of their life.

4. Set rules

Set rules about when you are going to call or how you are going to discuss parenting before they leave. While you will bear the brunt of the domestic responsibilities it is important that you allow your other half feel like they are still a part of the home life: discuss school trips, bills, teacher chats and play dates. This way you won’t feel like you are coping on your own and they will feel included.

5. Talk about jealously

While moving abroad doesn’t necessarily mean you or your partner are going to stray, it won’t stop niggling feelings clouding your mind. Be honest about your jealously and don’t keep any fears to yourself as you will just end up feeling resentful.
