Matt Cardle has just announced he is joining the cast of the popular West End show Strictly Ballroom The Musical!

The former X-Factor star informed his followers of the news yesterday via his Instagram.

Dressed to the nines, the 35-year-old uploaded a picture of him in character as the bandleader, Wally Strand, surrounded by other cast members.

Beside the colourful snap, Matt penned:

"I’m so excited to be returning to the West End and to be joining the cast of @strictlyballroomthemusical to play the part of Wally Strand from July 31st. It’s so rare that a role comes around that you can put so much of your own stamp on. I have seen the show and it’s absolutely incredible. "

"@bazluhrmann is an utter genius, as is @drewmconie. To have the opportunity to sing all these huge songs every night is a real honour. I have been a fan of @willyoungofficial for many years and he is so amazing as Wally, they are certainly big shoes to fill."

"Who’s coming? My 8-week run will end on Sept 22nd xx"

Matt will take over from another former X-Factor star, Will Young, who has played the character for the last 12 months.

Matt first rose to fame when he was crowned the winner of The X Factor in 2010.

Following his win, he released his debut single When We Collide, which was Christmas number one.

Since his X-Factor days, Matt has impressively sold over two million albums, had three Top 10 albums and played five sold-out UK tours.

The singer released Time To Be Alive earlier this year and had hits with I'm Not Letting Go Yet and Desire.

This won't be the first time Matt takes center stage, as he made his West End debut in 2015.

He played the lead role of Huey Calhoun in Memphis at the Shaftesbury Theatre and even won the Best West End Debut award for his performance.
