A child's birthday is a very special time for any mum, so our hearts go out to Katie Piper who was forced to miss her daughter Belle's first birthday due to a medical emergency last week.

The 31-year-old TV presenter, who hit the headlines seven years ago after surviving a horrifying acid attack, was unable to take part in her daughter's celebrations after suffering complications from a recent surgery.

As a result of injuries sustained by Katie during the horrifying attack, the mum-of-one undergoes regular throat surgeries in an effort to deal with throat complaints.

Unfortunately, however, her most recent surgery didn't go to plan, with an inside source revealing: "There was a slight side effect to the procedure causing the oesophagus to tear and causing air to leak into her body which is obviously very dangerous."

Having been admitted to hospital two days before Belle's birthday, Katie was unfortunately not discharged in time to join her little girl in celebrating her big milestone.

Katie broke the news via her Twitter account at the weekend, posting: "Thanks for all the birthday tweets for Belle! Unfortunately I'm in hospital but her dad tells me she's had a lovely party x "

We're sure Belle's mum will organise some belated mummy/ daughter celebrations as soon as possible and we're wishing the lovely Katie a very speedy recovery in the meantime!
