There is heartbreaking news today, as reports that a mother has been detained after she left her baby on the side of the road are emerging.

A mum in Maryland has reportedly been detained by police after she allegedly left her newborn baby girl on the side of the road at the weekend.

26-year-old Sandra Clara McClary from Baltimore has been charged with child neglect and reckless endangerment and is being held on a $500,000 bail bond.

According to the Associated Press, residents found the six-week-old girl in a carrier bag before midnight on Saturday. They subsequently called the police and the little girl was placed in the Department of Child Protective Services’ custody.

Alice Burton, who called the police that night, told local media: "If a car had came up the road, it sure would've ran over [her]. I think something should happen, you know, you just can't leave your child like that."

Bishop Raymond Showell, who also found the infant, said he initially thought it was a box. "I was just thinking that this is what the world has coming to, they're not as really concerned as we should be."

A truly heartbreaking time; we hope that everyone gets the help they need.
