Most people will find the idea of going for smear test somewhat daunting and when the test comes back with abnormal results it can be a particularly worrying and stressful time.  The next step in the event of an abnormal smear is to book an appointment with a colposcopy clinic. In this situation, most patients’ biggest concern is finding a reliable clinic that they know they can trust.

A colposcopy service has been available in Mount Carmel for many years and this year the gynaecologists with an expertise in colposcopy are coming together to provide an integrated and seamless colposcopy service. The women’s colposcopy clinic at Mount Carmel runs Tuesday to Friday; there are no waiting lists and the results are issued within a few days of the procedure.  The exemplary service means that the experience is made as stress free as possible for each patient.

A colposcopy may be required when a cervical smear shows abnormal results.  During a colposcopy a colposcopist will examine the cervix using a type of microscope called a colposcope. A liquid or dye may also be applied to the cervix to help identify any changes that have taken place in the cell. The whole procedure takes less than 10 minutes and while it might be a little uncomfortable, isn’t painful.  If you receive treatment, this may take a little longer.

The staff at Mount Carmel Colposcopy clinic are friendly and understand that you may be worried or nervous so will take every effort to explain the results of your smear test and the procedure to you. Before you book your appointment you will need to check with your insurance cover with your health insurance provider.  A copy of your abnormal smear test will also be needed when booking is confirmed.
