A mother has come to the defence of Prince William who has been accused of being work-shy’ following the revelation he only works 80 hours a month as an air ambulance pilot.

Donna Swyers says the Duke of Cambridge went beyond the call of duty to put her son at ease when he suffered an allergic reaction.

Following a potentially fatal reaction to eating a peanut, three-year-old Luke struggled to breathe and the air ambulance, piloted by the 33-year-old, was called.

When the helicopter landed at Luke’s school, the father-of-two, who was unable to leave the cockpit, made a character from a blown-up surgical glove to make the youngster smile.

Admitting that it touched her heart, Luke’s mum said: "We thought it was a really touching thing for Prince William to do as it really took his mind off everything that was going on. He works really hard and went beyond the call of duty to put Luke at ease. Luke wouldn't let go of the balloon glove, even taking it to bed with him.”

"When it was time for him to go back to school he asked me to put it in the boot of the car because he was scared it might fly away. Luke is only a couple of months older than Prince George as well, which I think he quite likes.”

Believing the youngster had been handed a yoghurt covered raisin, it wasn’t until that they realised it was a nut.

"All the staff who helped to look after Luke were brilliant. Everyone at the hospital, the doctors on the ambulance and Prince William himself - I want to say thank you."
