There have been a number of amazing and history-making birth stories in recent times, and this latest one is grabbing headlines around the world today.

A Swedish mum has made history after giving birth to a baby grown in her mother’s uterus.

The unnamed mother received her mum’s uterus in a transplant, after losing her own to cancer a number of years ago.

The mum, who is reported to be in her early thirties, underwent IVF to create embryos using her eggs and her husband’s sperm. A year after the transplant, acclaimed doctor Mats Brannstrom implanted the embryos.

The new mum, who said her happiness is ‘indescribable’, experienced no pregnancy complications and delivered a son via Caesarean at the end of last year. Nine months later, her transplant success has been shared all around the world.

According to reports, the transplanted uterus can be used twice before being removed, and the couple are said to be considering trying for a second child.

Speaking to media this week, the mum said that she will one day tell her son about the very special origins of his birth.

“My thought is that he will always know how wanted he was. Hopefully when he grows up, uterus transplantation [will be] an acknowledged treatment for woman like me, and he will know that he was part of making that possible,” she said.

Congratulations to the family.
