When we heard that an enterprising young mum had opened up a ‘breastfeeding café’, welcoming all families into its friendly environment, we were highly impressed. But to find out that the brains behind the idea has been receiving abuse over it is just downright baffling.

Charlotte Purdie, owner of The Milk Lounge, in Nottingham, has opened up about receiving death threats over her new business.

Charlotte became a mother last year, and the idea for a family-focused dining establishment came to her after being made to feel uncomfortable while nursing her son in regular cafés and restaurants.

The café is not exclusive to breastfeeding mums, of course – families of all shapes, sizes and feeding preferences are welcome to come, enjoy a spot of lunch, and relax in the knowledge that they will neither be judged nor made to feel uncomfortable.

As well as a fine fare of freshly baked goods, patrons can avail of a large changing room, a luxurious feeding room complete with en-suite bathroom, and plenty of activities for little ones.

While the majority of the feedback has been amazingly positive, Charlotte told the BBC that some of the criticism has been extreme.

“I have received death threats and abusive phone calls in the middle of the night since I opened. We are a family-friendly café, but some people are against us,” she admitted.

Wow – where is the sense in that?! We think it’s a fantastic idea, and we hope that it will continue to thrive.
