My baby spits up: Is this serious?

Spitting up is very common and most young babies spit up at least once a day. This is because their digestive systems are immature which makes it very easy for their stomach contents to come back up their oesophagus.

Babies spit up sometimes when they get too much milk too quickly which can be caused by your baby feeding too eagerly or too aggressively or if mum’s breasts are overfull. If the baby is distracted or fussing at the breast he may swallow air and spit up more often. Another common trigger of spitting up can be when babies are learning to crawl, teething or starting solids.

Spitting up usually happens just after baby feeds but can occur up to 1 or 2 hours after feeding. Half of all babies spit up in the first 3 months and usually peaks between 2 and 4 months. After 7 to 8 months you should notice that your baby has outgrowing spitting up and should have stopped spitting up by 12 months.

If your baby is happy and contented and gaining weight well then you have nothing to worry about with the exception of an overactive washing machine!
