We’re massive fans of Tom Hardy and we’re sad to hear the actor is heartbroken following the death of his beloved pet dog.

Tom penned an emotional tribute to his dog Woody, who sadly passed away earlier this week. In a heartfelt blog post, the actor told fans about his loss, explaining that Woody had died following a six-month battle with polymyositisis – a rare, autoimmune, muscle disease.

Tom found the rescue Labrador-cross dog while filming Lawless in Atlanta in 2012. Woody proved to be a faithful canine companion, even accompanying Tom to premieres on occasion.

The actor recalled how he had found Woody when he ran out in front of Tom’s car while he was driving with co-star Jessica Chastain.

At the time Woody was just 11 weeks old. Tom decided to keep the dog and called him Woodstock or Woody for short.

Tom paid tribute to Woody saying he was his “best friend” and said Woody helped him to move on from the death of his previous pooch Max.

He explained that his wife, Charlotte Riley, also had a close bond with the rescue dog.

“Charlotte worked tirelessly with him to get him through a rough case of separation anxiety. He loved her like his Mum. And when she was pregnant he guarded her fiercely.”

Woody was quite the regular on Hollywood movie sets, and red carpet premieres, and was even named TIME magazine's 73rd most influential animal.

Tom explained how Woody had found fame in Peaky Blinders and “beat JAWS.”

He went on to say: “I don't normally speak out about family and friends but this is an unusual circumstance. Woody affected so many people in his own right.”

Tom concluded the heart-breaking letter by thanking Woody for the times they shared together, stating that “the world for me was a better place with him in it and by my side.”

“Thank you, Woody, for choosing to find us. We will love you and be with you and you with us forever. Never ever ever forgotten. Your boy Tom xxx”

Poor Tom, we feel so sorry for him at this sad time. Dogs really are part of the family and parting with such a beloved pet must be so painful for him.
