Sleepwalking is more common than in children than adults, and most will eventually grow out of it. It can be triggered by stress, anxiety, fever or even having a full bladder.
While there isn’t much that parents can do to treat their child for sleepwalking, there are measure you can take to ensure their safety during these episodes.
- Some parents will put a stair gate on their child’s bedroom door to prevent them wandering around the house; however this will also prevent your child from visiting the toilet during the night and could lead to bedwetting issues. It’s best to place the stair gate at the top of the stairs instead to prevent any nasty falls.
- Make sure there are no obstructions in your child’s bedroom or on the route they might take in order to prevent any injuries.
- If your child is prone to sleepwalking, make sure they’re not sleeping in the top bunk of a bunk bed.
- While a stair gate should prevent your child from making it down the stairs, you should always make sure the front and back door is locked to prevent them from wandering out of the house.
