And while changing a diaper sounds like one of the simplest things in the world, if you don’t get it right from the get go then you are setting up yourself up for a fall!
Here are six handy tricks to ensuring you don’t end up with poo all over your hands, literally!
1. Be prepared!
Your newborn is guaranteed to have a dirty nappy after nearly every single meal, so it is best to be prepared for the worst at all times! Have a changing station in your home where you keep everything on display – creams, wipes, nappies and nappy bags - so they're to hand at all times. If you are really thinking ahead, you’d have nappies, wipes and cream in every single room of the house – Baby will never be able to catch you off guard.
2. Change on the floor
It’s ok to change your newborn on a changing table as they won’t be moving around, but you might want to take things to the floor when your little one starts to move around in case they fall off.
3. Be quick
Being good at changing a nappy is down to how quick you can be! You need to be able to wipe, clean, and put on a new one before they have a chance to roll away or wee all over the place!
4. Silence is golden at night
When changing your little one in the middle of the night, the last thing you want is your baby thinking it’s time to get up! We know it will be hard, but try to avoid eye contact, soothing talking or any kind of noise so that putting them back down is a lot easier.
5. It’s not about being perfect
You are not trying to create a masterpiece here, all you want is your baby to be comfortable and have a clean diaper on!
6. Cover them up
And we don’t mean for their modesty; babies, boys in particular, can shower you in wee as soon as the nappy comes off – so always keep their bum covered to stop this happening!
