Just hours after giving birth to a baby girl, Nicola Kenny was tragically killed in a road collision on Sunday.

The newborn was taken from Clonmel Hospital to Temple Street after her rising temperatures caused doctors to worry for her health.

Nicola was making the journey from Tipperary to Dublin with her mother and her aunt when they received a call from hospital staff saying that little Lily-Rose was doing well and was about to be transported back to Clonmel.

Just moments later the car the family were in collided with a truck on the M8 motorway.

Nicola’s mum, Ann and aunt Irene were taken to University Hospital Limerick while the new mum was sadly pronounces dead on the scene.

“We are all devastated,” a family member told the Herald.

“Sunday was a big day of celebration with the baby being born and the Tipperary success at Croke Park, and then this happened.

“Nicola was a great girl, she always had a smile on her face, she was well known in the town and knew everybody because she worked in the local Tesco. It’s heartbreaking.”

Nicola’s mum was released from hospital with a broken arm and a shoulder injury however, her aunt remains in intensive care.
