Welcoming a baby into the world is always a wonderful, joyful occasion that requires major celebration – but it has proven extra special for one Mayo family this week.

Laurence and Leanne May, from Ballinrobe in Co. Mayo, made history in their family this week when they welcomed daughter Saoirse Grace.

The tot, who was born last Thursday, is the first female to join the Mayo family’s bloodline in over a hundred years.

Since 1898, the May family has been dominated by men, making little Saoirse Grace’s birth last week extra special.

Speaking after the birth, proud dad Laurence told The Mayo News: “I checked the census records from 1901 and the last girl to be born in the family was 1898 when my grandaunt Anne was born. Anne would have been Saoirse’s great-grand-aunt.”

The 34-year-old added: “We didn’t know it was going to be a girl, it was a surprise…There’s great excitement, everyone was delighted.”

The May family aren’t the only ones who have made history with their newest addition. Earlier this year, the Lawrie family in the UK broke a 200-year family record with the birth of their daughter.

Congratulations to the family on their lovely news.
