She is known for not holding back when it comes to sharing her opinion with the world, but Loose Women star Coleen Nolan has come in for criticism today over her comments about her son.
Coleen – who has two sons with ex-husband Shane Ritchie, and a daughter with husband Ray Fensome – caused a stir when she branded eldest son Shane an ‘ugly’ baby.
The topic arose as the panel discussed a quote from singer Cher, who performed at the Billboard Music Awards last night. The star previously said that her mother told her she would never be ‘the smartest’, ‘the prettiest’ or ‘the most talented’.
The panel proceeded to discuss whether or not this was a positive tactic to employ in your own family life, and Coleen cast her mind back to the moment she welcomed son Shane.

“I love my kids, but when Shane Junior was born and the midwife went, ‘Oh, here’s your son, he’s beautiful’ and I looked down, I went, ‘Oh God, he’s not!’” she exclaimed.
“Honestly, he looked like a spider monkey. He had this jet black hair standing up on end. He was really skinny. I didn’t know whether to put him in a cot or a tree.”
While the 52-year-old’s comments were met with rapturous laughter by her fellow panel members, not everyone was so impressed by her sentiments.
Indeed, a number of viewers took to Twitter to criticise Coleen for being insensitive with her words.
“Telling your child that they’re ‘ugly’ is plain wrong, but we should stress to them that beauty isn’t everything in life,” tweeted one viewer.
Meanwhile, another person chimed in: “I would never tell a child they aren’t beautiful, because all children are in their own way. And special, too. Keep it positive around them.”
Look, we love a bit of motherly banter, and aren’t we all a little taken aback by those unexpected shocks of hair on our newborns?! But each and every baby is so precious and beautiful, and that’s a sentiment every mother needs to express to her little one.
