A decision to ban unvaccinated children from nursery, preschool and childcare centres has become a huge topic for debate this week in Australia, where government leaders are hoping to introduce the policy.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is asking for support from state and community leaders after announcing his plans to introduce the “no jab, no play” policy.

The move comes after the Australian Government met with a mother whose one-month-old baby died after it is believed they contracted whooping cough from a childcare centre.

"This is not a theoretical exercise - this is life and death,” said PM Turnbull.

"If a parent says, 'I'm not going to vaccinate my child,' they're not simply putting their child at risk, they're putting everybody else's children at risk, too."

Government officials are hoping to stop unvaccinated children from attending childcare or preschool unless there was a medical reason that prevented them from being immunised.

Currently, 93 percent of Australian children are vaccinated, but the country's PM is hoping the new measure would increase that figure to at least 95 percent.

"The level of public support for vaccination is so strong, I'm confident we will get a concerted national response,” he said.

"We protect all Australian children by ensuring that kids are vaccinated."
