Our 5 favourite movie mothers that never fail to tug on our heartstrings

Being a mum is not always an easy task, which is why it delights us when we get to see a strong, protective and loving mother represented on our screens.

There have been some incredible mums portrayed on the big screen over the decades, and they often give us words of wisdom and comfort to live by.

Today, we thought we would honour some of our favourite mums from the movies and give them a well-deserved shout-out.

Whether they are constantly in action, giving us a musical moment or simply being a shoulder to cry on, these iconic mothers will continue to be our inspirations for many more years to come. Have a scroll through our faves below:

Donna Sheridan (Mamma Mia)

Of course, we had to start out with this icon! Not only can she sing and dance, but Meryl Streep’s Donna is also a wonderful mum to her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried). As Donna became a mum at a young age, Sophie grows up to have a close-knit bond with her mother. Even though the pair occasionally disagree and miscommunicate, they have some beautiful, tear-jerking moments, too. We can never get through the Slipping Through My Fingers and My Love, My Life scenes without crying!

Helen Parr (The Incredibles)

She may be an animation, but we’re pretty in awe of this mum! Yes, she is often helped by her incredible elasticated skills, but Helen Parr would quite literally stretch herself thin for her children. As superhero Elastigirl, Mrs Parr can do it all. In one moment she will be lovingly feeding baby Jack-Jack, and then in the next, she will have stretched herself out into a boat shape to carry kids Violet and Dash across the water. What a woman!

Molly Weasley (Harry Potter)

The matriarch of the Weasley family, Molly Weasley is not to be messed with! She is fiercely protective of the ones she loves, which means that her children are often getting in her bad books when they get up to mischief. She is willing to take anyone in as her own, which makes her even more wholesome. Even though youngest son Ron isn’t a fan of her sandwiches or her homemade jumpers, she’s still a winner in our eyes!

Marmee March (Little Women)

Mrs March is one of our most long-standing favourite mums. Originated through the novel by Louisa May Alcott, Little Women’s Marmee is the mother that we all aspire to be. With her husband often away fighting in the war, Marmee is left to guide their four daughters - Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy - in their chaotic household. In the end, Marmee always knows how to settle bitter arguments between Jo and Amy, and how to support her girls when they need her most.

Miss Honey (Matilda)

Although she technically doesn’t become a mum until the end of the Matilda story, we think Miss Honey still deserves an honourary spot in our list of beloved mothers. A kind and loving teacher, Jenny sees the best in every child, including wiz-kid Matilda. She finds the courage to stand up to her trolling aunt Miss Trunchbull, and develops such a close bond with young Matilda that she ends up adopting her as her own. We all need a Miss Honey in our lives!
