Our favourite on-screen characters that every mum can relate to

Is there anything better than when you’re watching a movie or TV show and you see a character that you can really relate to? Whether it’s their personality or good-nature, it’s great to see someone like you on screen.

But sometimes these characters are few and far between. Films and television programmes often like to make these characters unrealistic, when a lot of the time, it’s nice to see someone having a ‘normal’ life that we experience ourselves.

Mum characters in particular can seem unrelatable, but when we come across an on-screen mum that we can see ourselves in, it truly makes us happy.

We’ve created a list of some of our favourite on-screen mums and have shared why we could watch them over and over again.

Donna Sheridan- Mamma Mia

Donna brought Sophie up to be strong and independent, just like her. She did everything she could to provide for her daughter on her own, even if it meant constantly struggling after she turned the old farmhouse into a hotel. She always puts her daughter first before any man and we simply can’t get over the constant love she has for her even after little fights. There’s never a dry eye in the house when Slipping Through My Fingers comes on!

Marge Simpson- The Simpsons

Marge is always there for whichever family member needs her and really is the glue of the clan. Whether it’s Homer after doing something silly, or Bart getting into trouble, she is the one everyone can rely on. She is always trying to see the positive side of things while protecting her family, and often comes out with great one-liners along the way.

Molly Weasley- Harry Potter

Molly may seem like a regular mum who knits ‘unique’ jumpers for her children and their pals, but when the time comes, she is strong-willed and will fight for her family. Even though she comes across as gentle when Harry pays a visit, it’s no wonder Ron seems scared of her at times.

Rachel Green- Friends

Rachel fell pregnant unexpectedly but did everything she could to provide for Emma, even at a time when she and Ross were no longer together. Rachel always celebrated every small win, for example, Emma’s first word, which was ‘gleba’; and went to great lengths to make special memories for Emma, like driving all the way to New Jersey to pick up her bunny birthday cake after the bakery sent the wrong one, and singing Baby Got Back to make her laugh.

Lorelai Gilmore- Gilmore Girls

Lorelai is almost more like a friend than a mum to her daughter Rory. She always puts her daughter first and as a young, single mum, she isn't afraid to show her feelings to her daughter. While constantly showering her with love, she finds humour in everything.

Joyce Byers- Stranger Things

Joyce stopped at nothing to help her son Will. When he went missing and nobody believed her that he was communicating with her through the lights in her home, Joyce did everything she could to find her boy. Her love for her son is unconditional and proves how far she would go to save him. Throughout the entire Stranger Things series, Joyce's undying love for Will never goes away, and she would go to the end of the earth to ensure his safety.
